A few days ago, one of my sweet blogger friends wrote a blog post that was centered around the topic of being burdened for the lost. Immediately, she did not receive a welcome response from this post. I truly believe it was because the message was taken out of context & read in a different way than what my friend meant. Today I would like to dive into what it means to be broken for the lost. This is my personal experience with God; what He has revealed to me, how He has worked in my life & the scriptures He has convicted my heart with. I pray you are convicted & encouraged as well.
Let’s look first, at the greatest commandment:
Matthew 22:37-38 // Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.
First of all, our command is to love the Lord with EVERYTHING. Our thoughts must love Him, our desires must love Him, our hearts must love Him, our dreams must love Him. When we surrender our hearts to Jesus, He not only changes us, but will also show us His perspective on others.
Which brings me to the second commandment:
Matthew 22:39 // And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Okay, so take a look at this verse. It doesn’t just say “love thy neighbor” but, LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF.
Ask yourself this question:
If I was on a journey & had been traveling for days with no food, no water & no rest & someone had a home filled with good food, clean water & a nice bed in the middle of the road where I was traveling, wouldn’t it be absolutely horrible for that person who had abundance NOT to share it me when I am SO desperate, SO tired, SO in need of what they had? Honest answer? It would be.
The truth is, EVERYONE is on a journey called life. There are some people who are so broken, so hurting, so unfulfilled, so desperate, that don’t even know that there is a place of refuge, fulfillment, contentment, restoration & rest found in Jesus.
We as Christians, are JUST LIKE the people with abundance. We know that Jesus is what we need to be fulfilled, so WHY don’t we share this with others?
I truly believe it’s: SELFISHNESS.
“I don’t want to be burdened with a love for the lost because I don’t want to have to endure pain & hardship in my walk with God. Someone else can love the lost. I’m just trying to take care of all of MY troubles in MY life & make MYSELF happy. Loving the lost doesn’t doesn’t have to be my burden. God will understand.” Sound familiar?
I think of all of the great missionaries, heroes of faith & even disciples/people in the Bible who followed Christ. They all saw their mission & obeyed Christ FULLY & FEARLESSLY. It definitely wasn’t easy, it didn’t always mean they got what they wanted or things turned out how they wanted them to, but their love for God far outweighed the cost of their sacrifice.
Look at another one of God’s commandments:
Matthew 16:24-26 // Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
We must be willing to lose our life for God’s glory & His purpose.
We have three jobs to be His disciple:
(1.) Deny Ourselves (our own dreams, our own wants, our own needs)
(2.) Take Up Our Cross (obey where He calls us to go, obey what He calls us to do, accept the call to love others)
(3.) Follow Jesus (follow His love, follow His light, follow His commands)
This life is not our own.
Being burdened for the lost DOESN’T MEAN you have to lay around in bed all day, crying or walking around depressed because you aren’t doing “great things” for God. But being burdened for the lost means you DO SOMETHING RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE. It means you go out & show love to those hurting & broken. It means you shine the light of Christ for all of the world to see: through your words, your actions, your social media accounts, the books you read, the movies you watch…. let them see JESUS (hope, peace, restoration, love, joy, beauty, rest) in YOU. It means you let His Holy Spirit guide you to who to serve & encourage & love on a day to day basis & you obey.
When you are broken, you understand what it’s like to be broken. & I know that God has used my broken experiences, for me to turn around into beauty – to truly love the broken. Sometimes you have to be broken, to know how desperately you need God. & sometimes you have to broken, to know how desperately OTHERS need God, just like you do.
The Lord may lead you on a mission field across the world, where you kiss & hug baby orphans who cry late at night. The Lord may lead you to your workplace: to serve every person you encounter with a joyful heart & a big smile. I don’t know where the Lord will lead you, but I DO know that WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW is your mission field.
See people like Jesus sees them: loved, cherished, died for, victorious, made in His image & so so priceless.
JESUS LOVED US SO MUCH HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR US – SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO TRULY LOVE OTHERS LIKE CHRIST DOES? WE GO OUT & LOVE. & IN RETURN GOD SAVES & CHANGES & RESTORES ALL FOR HIS GLORY.
Let Him take your life & use it all for His glory.
& this my friends, is how the lost become found. & God will use you if you pour out your life as a sacrifice to Him.
